Sara's Story

"I found out about DeNeuville from a friend. She went to DeNeuville to get her GED. I called DeNeuville Learning Center and went and registered for classes. I started in September, 2007. I went for a while then stopped.

Sister Lakshmie called and we talked. I decided to go back in 2008. I took the test at Messick in 2009. Then I went to the Board of Education. I passed all of the tests except math.

I kept going to school and after thirty days I went back to take the test. I failed. I was disgusted and wanted to give up so I stopped again. Elaine Hansom, my math teacher, called and she helped me see that I had really been making progress. When I was discouraged she encouraged me. I decided to go back to class.

I went back to school for several months. I went back to take the math test again. This time I was 20 points short of passing. Despair set in and I stopped again. My math teacher called. She gave me hope. I felt like she really cared. I went back to school.

I received my GED on February 26, 2010. I'm very grateful for DeNeuville, Sister Lakshmie and the teachers and volunteers. They care about people. They believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. I found courage and faith at DeNeuville that helped me move in spite of my fear. Now I'm enrolled in Southwest Community College and will start in the fall. Someday I hope to be counselor and help those with substance abuse."

Sara graduated in May 2010.

Katisha's Story

DeNeuville Learning Center has meant a second chance, an opportunity, and most of all, understanding. I found understanding not only in my lessons, but in how love and patience works, and that is what has been shown to me.

During my first days of attending DeNeuville, I must admit my mind was not completely made up. Different situations and seasons caused me to stray. But every time I called Sister Lakshmie for another chance to come back, she would say, "Yes, Katrina." Sometimes she would call me to say, "What's going on?" That put into my mind and my heart that they didn't give up on me, so I can't give up on myself. I decided to put all my selfishness aside and realize that I have six children to live for and to be an example for.

You can truly tell when God puts things together because you can feel the love and the people never change on you. DeNeuville never judged me and they were patient and understanding. The teachers and staff are a reflection of what DeNeuville stands for, and for that I am grateful. I am also grateful for the people God put in my life to help encourage me to go on. I now have plans to major in criminal justice at Southwest Community College this summer. This experience at DeNeuville took the fear of failure away from me and is now allowing me to move forward. So I would like to take this time to say, "Thank you."
